Harold Shipman, also known as “Dr. Death,” is one of the most notorious serial killers in modern history. A trusted and respected general practitioner in the United Kingdom, Shipman used his position of authority to commit a staggering number of murders over more than two decades. By the time he was finally caught, Shipman had killed at least 215 of his patients, making him Britain’s most prolific serial killer. His case sent shockwaves through the medical community and led to significant changes in how doctors are regulated in the UK.

Early Life and Medical Career

Harold Frederick Shipman was born on January 14, 1946, in Nottingham, England. He was the middle child of three, raised in a working-class family. Shipman’s mother, Vera, was a domineering figure in his life, and her death from lung cancer when Shipman was 17 profoundly affected him. He witnessed her suffering and the relief that morphine brought her in her final days, an experience that some believe influenced his later crimes.

Shipman went on to study medicine at the Leeds School of Medicine, graduating in 1970. He began his medical career as a general practitioner in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, but it wasn’t long before he faced his first brush with the law.
